100% Wild Mexicano (Agave Rhodacantha) Mexicano can take 8-11 years to mature depending on where it is harvested in the Zoquitlan region of Sierra Sur, Oaxaca. Mexicano is rich in sugar, which results in a higher yield of mezcal. On average, Rhodcantha yields 1,200 – 1,400 liters of mezcal from 12 tons of cooked Agave Rodacantha (~7% lower yield than Espadin).
When we first introduced Mexicano in the lineup they were 100% wild and over time we have transitioned in to semi-cultivated Rhodacantha to take the pressure off the few wild ones left in the region. We are actively planting these and other agave by seed for the future.
