As far back as we can recall we have been actively replanting maguey, at the very least since Don Lorenzo was a young boy. Today, our practices have expanded and we currently work with 50 families whom amongst their other farming activities also dedicate time to work as magueyeros (people who grow and take care of maguey). These families are able to do both because the style of planting we encourage is an ancient technique that uses the agave as natural fencing to protect the crops. We are currently planting, on average, 1,000 maguey a year, which by some standards seems like very little but given our extremely low production volumes it is sufficient. However, we recently decided to take a more aggressive and proactive approach and with the help of Heavy Métl Premium Imports we will be ramping up our reforestation program and planning on planting 5,000 seedlings in 2016 and aim to increase the number planted by 15% a year. The focus of this project is using seedlings, and letting the strongest and most genetically desirable go to flower and seed, with the intent of maintaining the biodiversity that makes the agave such an remarkable plant and allows for such different flavor profiles once distilled.
